An English-language Korean driver’s license and an International Driving Permit are not interchangeable everywhere. Recognition, permitted driving periods, and the documents you must carry depend on the country—and sometimes the state or province. Check the rules for the exact place where you will drive.

Quick answer. The English-language license is a Korean license with English details on the reverse and works for short-term driving only in participating locations. An IDP is a separate international permit. Neither document is automatically accepted worldwide.

How the two documents differ

English-language Korean driver’s license

This is a bilingual Korean license. The Korea Road Traffic Authority lists countries and regions that allow holders to drive for a short period without a separate certified translation. The list and permitted periods can change, and local authorities or rental companies may request additional documents.

International Driving Permit

An IDP is issued separately from your Korean license. Its stated validity is one year from issuance, but local law may allow driving for a shorter period after entry. The official guidance says to carry the IDP, the valid Korean license, and your passport together.

Which one should you prepare?

  • Short trip to a location recognizing the English-language license: confirm current acceptance with the Korean embassy and the rental company.
  • Location that does not recognize it: carry your Korean license, IDP, and passport.
  • Country with state- or province-level rules: check the exact jurisdiction where you will drive.
  • Multi-country trip: review each border crossing separately and consider carrying an IDP in addition to the English-language license.
  • Long-term stay: investigate local license conversion or testing because these documents usually cover only short-term driving.

IDP application essentials

For an application in person, the basic documents are a passport (a copy may be accepted), a Korean driver’s license, and one passport-style color photo taken within six months. The photo is 3.5 × 4.5 cm with a head length of 3.2–3.6 cm. Online issuance is also available, subject to the official service’s daily processing limit.

The current official fee is KRW 9,000 and the stated validity is one year from issuance. Police-station availability and accepted payment methods should be checked before visiting.

English-language license application essentials

The existing license is normally required, or another ID if it was lost. Bring one recent 3.5 × 4.5 cm passport-style photo if you want to replace the registered photo. Some renewal and reissue workflows are available online, but the physical card must be collected by the holder.

Five checks before departure

  1. Confirm the exact state, province, or region where you will drive.
  2. Check how long driving is allowed after arrival.
  3. Confirm which original documents must be carried together.
  4. Make sure the English name on the IDP exactly matches the passport.
  5. Check rental-company and insurance requirements, including minimum driving experience.

Common questions

Is the recognition list alone enough?

No. The official notice recommends confirming real-time acceptance, the permitted period, and required documents with the Korean embassy before entry. Treat the list as a starting point, not the final check.

Can I drive with only an IDP?

The official guidance says to carry the IDP, valid Korean driver’s license, and passport together. Check that English names and signatures match.

Is a privately sold “International Driving License” the same document?

No. The official authority warns that only an International Driving Permit from an authorized issuer is valid; similarly named private documents are not a substitute.
